A car accident, on Thursday, claimed the lives of three high school cheerleaders and injured four others on their way home from practice.

The accident occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle, left the two-way highway and struck a tree and went over an embankment. Officials say it appears the driver was distracted.

The Blount County coroner said, the girls were laughing and singing just moments prior to the accident happening. If you can imagine a bunch of kids in a car like that, it’s not hard to understand,” he said.

Hayden High School principal said he would always remember the girls’ smiles and school spirit. The school lowered the flag to half-staff in memory of the girls as students hugged and cried on the way to class.

No charges have been filed and the accident is being investigated by officials.
