According to a report from DecaturDaily.com yesterday, a stretch of just over two miles on Alabama 20 between I-65 and U.S. 31 has seen 83 motor vehicle accidents last year alone. Many drivers treat this dangerous stretch of four-lane country highway like it’s an interstate.
The story reports that although the road carries about 36,000 vehicles per day, it is only designed for up to 34,000. Tena Threet, a sandwich shop manager who has witnessed many of the accidents right in front of her place of business, gives a first-hand account of the problem. Another accident killed two people on Wednesday just yards from where Tena was interviewed 36 hours earlier for the story.
Consultants and planners for the county continue to propose solutions such as median cuts, traffic lights, reduced speed limits and more patrolling of the area. High congestion, U-turns, left-hand turns, gas stops and more are pointed to as some of the causes for the extraordinary number of motor vehicle acccidents in the area.
