Another school bus accident happened last week in Pennsylvania, causing injuries to 10 Conrad Weiser School District students.

A tractor-trailer collided nearly head-on with the school bus, causing it to run into a corn field and roll over on its side.

“Seeing the condition of the bus, we’re fortunate that everyone is still alive,” said Dr. Robert L. Urzillo, Conrad Weiser superintendent. “I can’t imagine what it was like inside that bus. We were real lucky.”

An editorial from the Reading Eagle, argues for the addition of seatbelts on school buses, pointing to the deadly school bus crash in Alabama at the end of 2006.

Proponents of the idea argue that seat belts would reduce the number of deaths and injuries, not to mention improving the behavior of the students and reduce driver distractions.

Opponents say that the belts could trap students in the buses. This was one of the arguments that was used against requiring the use of seat belts in cars. It didn’t hold up then and it doesn’t hold up now.
