A Streator man was awarded nearly $24 million in a medical malpractice case for brain damage he suffered while in the hospital to have a kidney stone removed, according to court records regarding the case.

In 2001, the man, who is now 34, was in St. Mary’s Hospital to have a kidney stone removed. While in the hospital’s care he suffered cardiac arrest which cut off the flow of oxygen to his brain, stated court records.

The injury put him in a wheelchair, took away his fine motor skills and caused spastic movements, severe double vision and slurred speech, according to the lawsuit.

A jury awarded him a $23.7 million judgment, last week.
