Westland/Hallmark Meat Company recently initiated the largest beef recall in U.S. History, to date.

The recall includes over 143 million pounds of frozen and raw beef produced by a slaughterhouse in Chino, because it may contain foreign materials.

37 million pounds of the recalled beef went to school lunch programs and has most likely been eaten already. Officials have said that danger to consumers is slim to none.

The action came nearly three weeks after the Humane Society of the United States released a video showing workers at the plant using forklifts and water hoses, among other methods, to rouse cattle too weak to walk. In addition to issues of animal cruelty, the video raised questions about whether so-called downer cattle were entering the food chain in violation of federal regulations.

The USDA estimates that about 8.4 million pounds of recalled beef has been recovered. No reports of illness or death of been reported in connection with the recalled beef.
