What should you do if you have just been in a car accident, but the other car didn't stop…

This is the classic "hit and run" scenario and a lot of times even if people have uninsured motorist coverage, their insurance company may not provide coverage. What do you need to do to insure that you are able to collect on your insurance policy? First, if there are any witnesses to your accident be sure to get their contact information so that an independent witness can corroborate your claim. Second, check your vehicle for any contact that the hit and run driver may have made with your car and point it out to the police officer. Finally, when talking to the police officer, make sure you provide details to the police officer about the make and model of the other driver, the color of the car, and any other details that you may recall about this other vehicle. The more details you provide, the more difficult it becomes for your insurance company to deny your claim.

If your insurance company fails to do the right thing, immediately speak to a lawyer. Don’t waste time, because your insurance company may use your delay in filing a claim to their advantage. Hopefully you will never need to use your uninsured motorist benefits, but in the event you do, be prepared and don’t assume your insurance company will do the right thing.
